Escenes d’un matrimoni
By Ingmar Bergman Director Marta Gil
Johann and Marianne seem to have the perfect marriage. At the beginning, Marianne is a successful marriage lawyer and Johan, in his 40s, is a well-respected scientist at a prestigious institution. They have two daughters. Both seem fully capable of reflective thought and sometimes border on smug, so satisfied are they with their marriage. But the spectator needs to understand their happiness, their inner workings, not just as a couple, but how they interact with their biological families, society, the state, the world they live in...
In six scenes, Bergman portrays the path taken by the couple. Six occasions separated in time by several months or years: the perfect union, the first little arguments, the separation (due to another woman), the first encounter after the separation, the divorce and, finally, years later, a night together in a house in the middle of nowhere.
The two protagonists fall from scene to scene, always from the unknown – from an involuntary place, as there seems to be no other way of facing up to what we do not know. Intellectual security gradually evaporates, and new core issues appear: fear, uncertainty, impotence, the haze around the relationship with both the self and with others, in a living world, where civil marriage is becoming a pathetic symbol. Maybe this is an even more open theme, maybe we have developed different strategies, or maybe there is still fear, fear of the mask, fear of playing, playing every day until death us do part.
