De Moreno Bernardi, with words by Alda Merini Director Moreno Bernardi
"La diversa" was born from the poems of Alda Merini (1930–2009), a writer and poet considered one of the clearest, most profound voices in twentieth-century Italian poetry. She was confined for almost 20 years to a psychiatric hospital, where she received some 37 electric shocks. The poet’s work looks at the experience of madness and her salvation.
Moreno Bernardi constructs a soliloquy for actress Laia Casals and guides us through the solitude of a confined, visionary woman, casting a light on her sorrow and silence; fear, hatred and love; motherhood and isolation; and the doctors’ attempt to snuff out her voice and her dignity.
A fragile and strong, alive and delirious, angry and saintly woman who, from the room in which she is trapped, confesses realities that are difficult to hear: the paradise found in the hell of the asylum; love through spiritual carnality with Christ; angels’ ambiguity between the sacred and the profane; the Virgin Mary’s doubts and searing pain.
In La diversa, with an abstract, poetic and concrete brand of theatre, Bernardi offers us all of the poet’s voices on an empty stage. A painful space where Laia Casals’ performance, characterised by its particular poetic and emotive weight, invites the audience, once they have heard the words, to see them where they imagine them to manifest. ‘I believe that the desire to explain, to speak, stems from the constant attempt to compose the dignity of experience’ (MB).
