Assaig sobre la lucidesa
By José Saramago Director Roger Julià
Four years ago, in the capital, a plague of blindness brought out the best and worst of the city’s people and their leaders. Only one woman saw it all. Now, four years later, the people are summoned to vote. And, apparently spontaneously, they all leave their ballots blank. This relentless questioning of the parties that manage democracy will generate a violent confrontation between the powerful and the city. And the woman who saw it all is still there. And still seeing it all.
Assaig sobre la lucidesa is the second part of the famous Assaig sobre la ceguesa: a piece through which José Saramago goes a step further in his critical gaze upon the mechanisms of power and shines a light on corruption in the democratic system.
This theatrical adaptation brings us face to face with this Saramagan fable. The piece is especially relevant given the people’s revolts all over the world in the last ten years and emphasises the much-needed debate around so-called “real democracy”.
